Analysis of the 23rd – 26th May European Elections and Prospects of China-EU Relations

Jo Leinen, former Head of the EP Delegation for Relations with China, and Dr. Nadine Godehardt, Deputy Head of the Asia research division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, discussed the future of China-EU Relations in the light of the recent elections to the European Parliament.

Meeting with Chinese scholars and practitioners at the China Institute for Contemporary International Relations (CICIR) and the Grandview Institute, the two German guests presented their analyses on the implications of the elections’ results for the constitution of the new EU institutions and the perceptions of China in Brussels and Berlin.

Of notable interest was for example the EU Commission’s strategy paper on China published in March 2019, the role of eurosceptic movements and their view on China, as well as the role of the USA in Sino-European relations.

What became clear during these exchanges was the ever increasing importance of EU-China relations in the context of the EU’s internal efforts to shape a more unified European foreign policy, but also vis-à-vis third powers such as the US and Russia.
