China’s Energy Transition in the Geopolitical Era

A policy paper by Chinese researchers examines the development of the energy transition in China and the challenges it faces, taking into account, among other things, the role of geopolitics in policy-making.

China aims to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, guided by the Five-Year Plans and the “1+N” policy framework. Energy lies at the core of this transformation. This analysis by researchers from Duke Kunshan University (DKU) examines progress and remaining challenges in China’s energy transition, and shows how it has become increasingly intertwined with industrial and geopolitical strategies, highlighting the need for closer alignment between climate, energy, and trade policies, including in cooperation with China’s partners.
