Human Rights Forum on Human Rights and Humanitarian Assistance

The Chinese foundation for the development of human rights and the FES Beijing office jointly hosted a webinar on Human Rights and Humanitarian Assistance

While there are obvious differences between the human rights concept of Germany and China as well as in concepts and approaches to humanitarian assistance, both sides agreed that wars, conflicts, the occurrence of natural disasters and worsening global food insecurity mean that an unprecedented number of people are dependent on humanitarian assistance. Both sides also see the necessity that civilians in conflict regions must be protected and humanitarian corridors guaranteed. Both sides also saw the potential for better coordination on needs analysis and division of work for humanitarian assistance.

This is was Prof. Herta Däubler-Gmelin, former German Minister of justice; Prof. Reinhard Gaier, former judge at Germany´s federal constitutional court, Frank Schwabe, member of the German Bundestag and parliamentary group's spokesperson on human rights and humanitarian aid; Dr. Stephan Grabherr, deputy head of mission at the German embassy in China as well as Balduin Benesch, Vice-Dean at the Sino-German Institute of Law of China University of Political Science and Law discussed with Chinese counterparts from China´s ministry of foreign affairs, China´s ministry of public security, China´s People´s Liberation Army and leading Chinese think tanks and universities.

The side program for the visiting German experts event included a visit of the training centre for China´s Peacekeeping Police, located in Langfang City of Hebei Province, near Beijing. As well as an exchange with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in China.
