Preservation and future prospects of multilateral arms control

In November 2024 FES Beijing organized again a week-long exchange in Beijing between German arms control experts like;

Prof. Angela Kane, chair of the dialogue advisory group, Senior Advisor to the Nuclear Threat Initiative, and former United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs.

Prof. Michael Stack, chair of political science at Helmut Schmidt University of the Bundeswehr (Germany´s armed forces);

Dr. Oliver Meier, Policy and Research Director at European Leadership Network (ELN);

as well as Prof. Götz Neuneck, former deputy director of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH) at University of Hamburg as well as Pugwash representative of the Association of German Scientists

with the following Chinese associations and thinktanks:

- China Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA)

-Chinese Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR)

-The Grandview Institution

-The Global Governance Institution (GGI)

- The Chinese Institute for International Strategic Studies (CIISS)

-The China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU)

-The Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU)

Experts from both countries agreed that we currently experience times of profound international change and uncertainty. And both sides agreed that against this background it is even more important to preserve the multilateral arms control system.

In the respective seminars and workshop nuclear security, outer space weaponry and technology, artificial intelligence as well as arms control of conventional weapons and medium-range missiles were central topics of this German-Chinese exchange. Furthermore, also the Russian war against Ukraine, the involvement of the DPRK as well as the lowering of the nuclear threshold by certain powers were addressed.
